What to Wear to European Christmas Markets (Stay Warm Without Overpacking)
One thing you quickly learn while visiting European Christmas markets is that they are magical… and cold.
The twinkling lights, the smell of mulled wine, and the music drifting through the stalls make winter markets unforgettable. But most of the experience happens outdoors, often standing or slowly wandering for hours.
After several Christmas market trips with my mom, we learned exactly what works — and what ends up staying in the suitcase.
Here is what we actually wore while exploring Christmas markets across Europe.
A Warm Coat You Can Wear All Day
Your coat is the most important item you will bring.
Choose something warm but not bulky enough to feel heavy after several hours of walking. Many travelers prefer a wool coat or a lightweight down coat that can be layered.
Christmas markets are often crowded, and you will be standing close to heaters, food stalls, and other people, so breathable warmth is key.
Comfortable Boots
European Christmas markets often take place in historic squares with cobblestone streets.
Comfortable boots with good traction are essential. Waterproof boots are even better, especially if there is snow or rain.
My personal rule: if you cannot comfortably walk several miles in them, leave them at home.
Layers Are Everything
Instead of packing bulky sweaters, wear layers.
A typical winter market outfit might include:
• Long sleeve base layer
• Light sweater or cardigan
• Warm coat
This allows you to adjust if you move between outdoor markets and warm cafés.
Warm Accessories
Small items make a big difference.
Do not forget:
• Gloves
• A warm scarf
• A hat or ear warmer
Your hands will thank you while holding a hot mug of glühwein.
Crossbody Bag
Crowded markets are not the place for large handbags.
A small crossbody bag keeps your hands free for food, shopping, and photos while keeping your belongings secure.
Tip from Traveling with Mom
Pack hand warmers.
They take up almost no space and are wonderful when temperatures drop at night.
(Just maybe do not pack enough to supply an entire ski resort like my mom did.)
