Rhine River Castles: A Guide to What You Are Seeing From the Ship

Follow Every Castle on Your Cruise

A simple way to follow along the Rhine and recognize each castle as you pass

One of the most magical parts of cruising the Rhine River is watching castles appear around every bend. But after the first few, they begin to blur together, and you find yourself wondering, Which one is this?

A few years ago, I created something for myself that completely changed the experience: a simple map paired with notes that helped me identify each castle, understand the history, and even follow along using the kilometer markers along the river.

It turned the cruise into something entirely different. Not just beautiful, but meaningful.

Sometimes the best travel moments come from understanding what you are seeing, not just passing by it.

So I am sharing both of those resources here with you. You can download them before your cruise and follow along as you sail through one of the most beautiful stretches of river in Europe.

This illustrated map shows the castles along the most scenic stretch of the Rhine, along with nearby towns and kilometer markers so you can better orient yourself while onboard.

Download the Castle Guide

This companion guide includes descriptions of each castle, notes on which side of the ship to look from, and historical details that make each one more memorable.

For example, you will pass Marksburg Castle, the only castle in this region that was never destroyed, and Rheinfels Castle, once one of the largest and most powerful fortresses along the Rhine.

How to Use This on Your Cruise

As you sail between Koblenz and Bingen, keep the map open on your phone or print it ahead of time. Watch for the kilometer markers along the river banks. They will help you track where you are as the castles begin to appear one after another.

Many of these castles were originally built for protection and to control trade along the river, which is why they appear so frequently in this stretch.

It becomes a quiet kind of game: spotting each castle, matching it to the map, and watching the story unfold as you go.

And somehow, it makes the entire experience feel slower, richer, and far more memorable.
