Docking Locations, Bus Transfers & What to Expect

One of the Questions I Hear Most
And many times, that's exactly what happens.
But not always.
One of the most common questions I see in Viking River Cruise Facebook groups is:
"How much time will we spend on buses?"
It's a great question—and one I wish I had understood better before booking my first river cruise.
After sailing four different Viking River Cruises across five European rivers, I've learned that every itinerary is a little different.
Some ports are true "dock and walk" destinations.
Others require a short shuttle.
And a few of Europe's most unforgettable places simply aren't located on the river, making a motor coach part of the experience.
None of these are deal breakers.
In fact, some of my favorite places required a bus to reach them.
The key is simply knowing what to expect before you book.
This guide is based on our personal experience sailing four different Viking River Cruises, combined with research into Viking's typical docking locations. River cruising is wonderfully dynamic, so docking locations and transportation can vary due to water levels, river traffic, and local conditions. Think of this guide as a planning tool rather than a guarantee.
What Do I Mean by Dock & Walk?
For this guide I've divided each port into three simple categories.
Dock & Walk
You can typically leave the ship and walk into the historic center on your own.
These are wonderful ports if you enjoy exploring independently.
Dock & Shuttle
The ship normally docks outside the city center, but Viking generally provides transportation or the walk is longer than many travelers prefer.
Dock & Bus
The destination isn't located directly on the river.
Your excursion begins with a motor coach.
These transfers are often necessary to reach some of the most memorable destinations on the itinerary.
Romantic Danube
Budapest to Nuremberg
Overall Dock & Walk Rating
★★★★☆
The Romantic Danube offers an excellent balance of walkable cities and worthwhile coach excursions. If you're hoping to spend plenty of time exploring independently, you'll find several ports where that's easy to do.

Things That Surprised Me
Although several excursions require transportation, I never felt like we spent too much time on buses. The balance between scenic cruising, guided touring, and free time made this itinerary an excellent introduction to river cruising.
Rhine Getaway
Amsterdam to Basel

If independent exploring is high on your priority list, I think the Rhine Getaway is one of Viking's best itineraries.
Several ports allow you to step directly into town, while a few unforgettable destinations require transportation simply because they aren't located on the Rhine.

Things That Surprised Me
Some of the excursions with the longest coach rides—especially Heidelberg and Colmar—became some of my favorite memories from the cruise.
The transportation was simply part of reaching places that river ships cannot.

This itinerary is quite different from the Rhine or Danube.
It's as much a land journey as it is a river cruise.

Before You Book
This was probably the biggest surprise of the entire itinerary.
Although your journey begins in beautiful Prague, your river cruise does not.
Embarkation day includes a lengthy motor coach transfer from Prague to the ship.
Several guests on our cruise mentioned they had not realized how long this transfer would be until they experienced it.
That doesn't make it a bad itinerary.
In fact, I loved this cruise.
But if one of the reasons you're choosing a river cruise is to minimize time on buses, this is something worth knowing before you book.
Christmas on the Main & Moselle
Bamberg to Trier
Overall Dock & Walk Rating
★★★★☆
Once the cruise begins, many of the towns along the Main and Moselle are wonderfully walkable.
However, this itinerary also includes some of the longest overland transfers of any Viking cruise I've taken.

Before You Book
If I could tell future travelers one thing before they book this itinerary, it would be this:
The overland portions of the trip are a much bigger part of the experience than they are on the Rhine or Romantic Danube.
Between the pre-cruise stay in Prague, the transfer to the ship, and the post-cruise extension to Paris, you'll spend considerably more time traveling by motor coach than on most other Viking itineraries.
That isn't a criticism.
It's simply something I wish I'd understood before booking.
Knowing that ahead of time allows you to enjoy the journey for what it is rather than being surprised by it.
Which Cruise Is Best If You Want to Minimize Bus Time?
If your goal is to spend as much time as possible walking directly from the ship into town, here's how I would personally rank the four itineraries.

My Biggest Takeaway
After four Viking River Cruises, I've realized the better question isn't:
"Does this itinerary include bus rides?"
Instead, it's this:
"Are the bus rides worth what they allow me to experience?"
For me, the answer was almost always yes.
Some of my favorite places—Heidelberg, Strasbourg, Colmar, Göttweig Abbey, and the Black Forest—simply aren't located where a river ship can dock.
Those coach rides became part of the adventure.
I created this guide not to discourage anyone from choosing a particular itinerary, but to help set realistic expectations before you book.
Knowing what to expect is one of the best ways to enjoy your river cruise from the very beginning.
A Note About Docking Locations
River cruising is wonderfully flexible, and that's part of its charm.
Docking locations can occasionally change because of river traffic, water levels, construction, local events, or which berth is assigned that day.
The information in this guide reflects our experience along with the docking patterns that Viking most commonly uses, but your exact experience may vary.
